Collection: Nicolae Vermont – Romanian painting between academism, symbolism and social life

Nicolae Vermont – modern Romanian painter and founding member of the Baia Mare School

Nicolae Vermont (1866, Bacau – 1932, Bucharest) was a remarkable Romanian painter of the modern period, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest and later in Munich. He was a founding member of the "Tinerimea Artistica" group and a close associate of Nicolae Grigorescu and Stefan Luchian.

His style evolved from academicism to symbolism and social realism. He approached diverse themes – from portraits and rural scenes to modest interiors and religious representations – often illustrating the human condition and the simple lives of people on the margins of society.
