Collection: Nicolae Tonitza – modern Romanian painting and the poetry of faces
Nicolae Tonitza – painter of inner expressiveness and fragile beauty
Nicolae Tonitza (1886, Barlad – 1940, Bucharest) is one of the most beloved and influential modern Romanian painters. He was a painter, graphic artist, art critic and teacher, and his style is unmistakable – poetic, warm and deeply human.
Tonitza distinguished himself through his portraits of children , often melancholic, interior compositions, nudes and social themes, in which emotion and delicate color dominate. He studied in Munich and Paris and was a member of the Group of Four, along with Oscar Han, Francisc Sirato and Stefan Dimitrescu. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Iași and was its rector.
His works are recognized for the characters' large, sad eyes and pastel palette, becoming symbols of modern Romanian painting.
