Dumitru Ghiata (1888, Colibasi – 1972, Bucharest) was one of the most important modern Romanian painters. He studied in Bucharest and Paris, being influenced by post-impressionism, but also by the national school of painting. He was a member of the Romanian Academy and a professor at the Institute of Fine Arts.

Ghiata's painting is marked by simplicity and emotion, with themes that include Romanian villages, flowers, interiors and portraits. Color, light and line are treated with balance and refinement, and his works have a lyrical clarity that recalls traditional values.
